Dr Laherty works collaboratively with patients to educate them about their symptoms and to help them make decisions about their treatment. He will listen to concerns, explain the results of diagnostic studies and discuss a range of possible options for care.
Dr Laherty is a University of Queensland graduate. His surgical training included positions at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospitals, the Royal Children’s Hospital (Brisbane), the Mater Children’s Hospital and the Princess Alexandra Hospital. He interrupted this training to participate in research into immune treatments for brain tumours through the University of Queensland and Queensland Institute of Medical Research with Prof. David Walker.
After completing his Fellowship training in Neurosurgery in 2009, Dr Laherty sought further education and training in Spine Surgery with strategic Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic mentors. He was a consultant with the Spine Surgery Service at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and was Deputy Director of the Trauma Service for a period. Dr Laherty continues to enjoy educator roles with the University of Queensland and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Dr Laherty has held advisory roles at the Therapeutic Goods Administration and is an Officer of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps. He has been recognised as a key opinion leader by industry and is engaged with various companies in product development and surgeon education. He holds a Masters of Health Management from the Queensland University of Technology.
Dr Laherty is an Associate at Queensland Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery. He offers services at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside (Chermside) and at Greenslopes Private Hospital.
In his spare time, Richard enjoys spending time with his wife and children at the beach and sporting events.
